AAKG by Now Foods is a supplement of Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, a metabolic derivative of arginine, which is a conditionally essential amino acid that plays a number of vital roles in the body. Among other things, it is also important for protein synthesis and for the support of a healthy immune function.
AAKG powder from NOW Foods is the semi-essential amino acid arginine in combination with the energy substrate alpha ketoglutarate, in powder form. We chose AAKG Powder from NOW because it is 100% pure arginine alpha ketoglutarate, without any additives. In contrast to AAKG capsules or tablets, AAKG powder can be dosed more easily and is therefore ideally suited for individual sports-therapeutic use.
What are the effects of arginine alpha ketoglutarate (AAKG)?
Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid (protein building block), which means that it can be produced by the body itself. However, the body's own production is limited, similar to the amino acid glutamine. The arginine requirement during injury and wound healing phases, top athletic performance and susceptibility to infection can also be significantly increased. If, for example, connective tissue (collagen) is produced, the arginine-dependent enzyme arginase is required.
As a precursor for the vaso-relaxing nitric oxide (NO), the protein L-arginine improves the function of the blood vessels and the blood flow. If it is taken before physical activity, an improved "pump" is described, which is due to the increased blood flow to the stressed muscle groups and body tissue. This improvement in blood flow can increase exercise tolerance (e.g. reduction in lactic acid levels), which is very much appreciated by many athletes. Increased blood circulation is also desirable in the case of potency problems. Arginine is also a cofactor in creatine metabolism (rapid energy) and the urea cycle (urea excretion).
If arginine is combined with hydrochloride (HCL), as is the case with other and often very cheaper arginine preparations, gastrointestinal complaints often arise. By combining arginine with alpha ketoglutarate, this form of “AAKG” is usually much better tolerated.
In addition, alpha ketoglutarate, as an intermediate substance of the citric acid cycle (energy metabolism), can be viewed as an independent "energizer". As the basic skeleton of the essential amino acids, the body is able to produce some of the essential amino acids from alpha ketoglutarate itself. Dextrose can also be produced in the kidney from alpha ketoglutarate if required.
Important: In the case of an arginine substitution, it is always important to ensure that sufficient antioxidants are given. Smoking should also be avoided, as argining can otherwise produce harmful peroxynitrite.
How is this AAKG powder used?
AAKG powder (Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate) can be dissolved and drunk in liquids such as tea, water, self-squeezed fruit juices, smoothies). It tastes bitter to sour. Since the taste is very dominant, it can be combined less well with food (except possibly sour dishes).
To support connective tissue regeneration, muscle building and the immune system, AAKG powder is used in doses of 6-9g per day.
To improve wound healing in large injuries and burns, dosages of up to 20g per day, divided into 2-4 individual doses, are indicated.
To increase blood flow to the blood vessels, "muscle pumps" and potency, 5g AAKG powder should be taken about 15 minutes before activity.
A combination of amino acids optimized for the athlete, such as arginine, glutamine, BCAA, is offered in our product packages for the desired sport.
